South Africa & Namibia – Wildlife & Winelands & Wilderness

"By going and coming a bird weaves its nest" ~Ashanti proverb

27 July – 18 August 2013

Sarah has had an enduring love affair with Africa since living there thirty years ago, and this, her fourth tour unravels all the mystery and majesty of this extraordinary destination at a most exciting time in history.
Not for the faint-hearted, despite the extraordinary comfort and mostly luxurious circumstances, the frontiers of Africa are for those seeking an unforgettable journey.
"A Map is not the Territory"........

From a crisp dawn landing in Jo'burg you are immediately whisked off in small aircraft. Descending out of vast African skies, land in the St Lucia Wetlands amongst a dazzle of zebras and a journey of giraffes. From that moment to the last - on jeeps and planes - in game reserves, stunningly appointed lodges, tented camps, elegant country houses - become totally immersed in the African experience in all its complexity.

Over 23 days, be awed by the majesty of game, humbled by life and history in the townships, seduced by the beauty of the Cape and its sumptuous winelands, challenged by the infinite enormity and emptiness of the saltpans, surprised by the overall quality of cuisine and service, confounded by the sociological and political conundrums, and smitten with the sheer breathtaking diversity of it all.

Travel in South Africa is like no other: a feast for the senses, unparalleled luxury in exquisitely appointed lodges, the exceptional thrill of incredible proximity to wildlife, the dramatic beauty of the Cape Country with an evolving and increasingly sophisticated wine industry steeped in historical buildings, and a surprisingly excellent cuisine. Her history, often tragic, is none the less deeply engaging.

GREAT SOUTH AFRICANS OF OUR TIME

“I dream of an Africa which is in peace with itself. “

Nelson Mandela

“When the missionaries came to Africa they had the Bible and we had the land. They said "Let us pray." We closed our eyes. When we opened them we had the Bible and they had the land. “

Desmond Tutu

“Everybody now admits that apartheid was wrong, and all I did was tell the people who wanted to know where I come from how we lived in South Africa. I just told the world the truth. And if my truth then becomes political, I can't do anything about that. “

Miriam Makeba
